Audubon International Honors Golf Courses Reaching Significant Certification Milestones in 2023

As 2023 enters its final stretch, Audubon International – the environmentally focused non-profit organization offering members numerous certifications and conservation initiatives to protect the areas where we all live, work, and play – proudly honors 40 courses in the United States and abroad that have attained an admirable milestone as certified Audubon Certified Sanctuary Program for Golf members for 10, 20 and 30 years.

Every year, Audubon International recognizes member courses that reach these impressive milestones, awarding plaques to those at the 30- and 20-year level and certificates to those at the 10-year level.

“These 40 honorees for 2023 continue an important, longstanding tradition at Audubon International,” says Christine Kane, CEO. “They also set a high bar for sustainability practices and stewardship culture that all our members strive to clear the moment they take on the ACSP challenge. Seeing these courses’ dedication in action with every passing year is truly inspiring and proof positive that we are helping golf facilities of all kinds lead the way to a more environmentally friendly industry for the benefit of everyone.”

Two American courses reached the 30-year mark in 2023, including the Bay Course at Kapalua Resort on the Hawaiian island of Maui and Village Links of Glen Ellyn west of Chicago, Ill. Along with three courses in Canada and one in the Philippines, twenty-one American courses reached the 20-year milestone–four in California, three in Florida, two each in Massachusetts and North Carolina, and one each in Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, New York, South Carolina, Virginia, and Wyoming. Hitting the 10-year mark were 14 courses overall–a dozen in the United States and two in Canada. Colorado led the way with three courses, while California, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Maine, Minnesota, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Washington notched one each.

The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf is an award-winning education and certification program that helps golf courses protect the environment and preserve the natural heritage of the game of golf. By helping people enhance the valuable natural areas and wildlife habitats that golf courses provide, improve efficiency, and minimize potentially harmful impacts of golf course operations, the program serves an important environmental role worldwide.

Topgolf Boston-Canton Opens Nov. 3

59

Modern golf entertainment leader Topgolf announced the first Massachusetts venue will open on Friday, Nov. 3.

The Basics

  • What’s Topgolf? It is a sports entertainment experience that features high-tech golf, food, drinks, music, and a good time. Think of it as a place where anyone can participate in the game of golf in a relaxed environment. You’ll take aim at giant targets on the field while playing virtual courses or Topgolf’s signature games like Angry Birds.
  • What Topgolf isn’t? It’s a place where people get too hung up on the bad shots – just call it a practice swing, and as long as you’re having fun, you’re winning at Topgolf.
  • About 20 miles from downtown Boston, the venue is located at 777 Dedham Street in the city of Canton.
  • This will be Topgolf’s first venue in Massachusetts, marking its 84th outdoor venue in the U.S. and 94th globally.
  • The venue will employ roughly 400 Playmakers (aka employees) – think bay hosts, bartenders, ball picker upper people, etc.

It’s Golf

  • Topgolf Boston-Canton will feature 90 outdoor climate-controlled (that means heated!) hitting bays spanning three levels. Each bay has lounge-type furniture or high-top tables where groups can cheer – or heckle – the other Players (aka guests).
  • The venue is equipped with Topgolf’s Toptracer technology, which traces each golf ball’s flight path, distance, and other cool metrics to impress your friends.
  • Bonus: On Tuesdays, gameplay is half-off!
  • Players can even partake in lessons through Topgolf’s Coach program, led by the venue’s Director of Instruction.

It’s Not Golf

  • Topgolf takes its “not golf” very seriously. That’s why a full-service restaurant manned by executive chefs, a 28-foot video wall, more than 200 HDTVs (ideal for watching the Pats or Red Sox), music, and year-round family-friendly programming is just as much a part of the Topgolf experience.
  • Private event rooms are the prime spot for team outings, family gatherings, meetings, or anything. Players are looking to celebrate.

What They Said

  • Topgolf Chief Operating Officer Gen Gray: “Opening our first venue in Massachusetts is a huge milestone for us, and we can’t wait to introduce our style of play to the Boston area. There’s been a ton of excitement within the Topgolf family about this venue opening, and we’re so excited to see it come to life.”
  • Town of Canton Vice Chair John J. Connolly: “It is truly an honor to welcome the newest Topgolf venue in the northeast to our town of Canton. I’ve had the pleasure of working with many truly amazing people from Topgolf. This venue will be a huge benefit to our residents, with the creation of several hundred jobs. We look forward to working with Topgolf to ensure they are the premier entertainment destination in the Boston area and beyond.”

Cobra Air-X Hybrids and Irons

632

The new Air-X Hybrids and Irons from Cobra Golf are the lightest the company has ever produced, with both women’s and men’s models available.

Complementing the Air-X metalwoods that were announced at the same time, the hybrids and irons of the family are super lightweight to promote faster swing speeds, producing more distance and more spin for shot control. Plus, since slicing is often a problem for less accomplished players that Cobra has targeted to play these clubs, Air-X hybrids, and irons have a significant amount of hosel offset with weighting towards the heel. Both features tend to correct the dreaded left-to-right ball flight of a slice.

As they have done previously, Cobra has put the Air-X family clubs together in package sets. For women a cart bag, 15° Driver, 3W, 5W, 5H, 6i-PW, SW and mallet putter are in the set and for men a cart bag, 11.5° driver, 3W, 4H, 5H, 6i-PW, SW and a blade putter. Either is priced at $1,499, a considerable savings compared to purchasing the clubs individually and more good news, the sets are the same price as the 2021 Air-X.

Cobra’s New Air-X Driver & Fairways

27

Cobra Golf redoes the super lightweight Air-X driver and fairways and again offers straight neck and offset versions of the driver in both men’s and women’s models.

Lighter clubs can swing faster, and this can be a big deal for ladies and senior men, those with moderate swing speeds. More swing speed produces more yardage and makes the game more enjoyable. Cobra is committed to the idea of a lightweight line of clubs, and the Air-X drivers and fairways fit that description well; they are very light, with the driver tipping the scale at just 290 grams, including a 41g grip and 50g shaft.

Air-X drivers have a slight draw bias enhanced by the 13g heel weight in the sole, and the same size weight increases forgiveness in the trailing edge or skirt. Both men’s and women’s drivers are available with either a straight hosel or moderate offset catering to those needing help reducing the amount of side spin that produces a slice.

The current Air-X models can be looked on as evolutionary steps from those introduced two years ago but the interesting fact is the prices are the same, a nice benefit for any golfer’s wallet.

Mizuno ST-G Driver

42

Mizuno has added the better-player category ST-G driver to their current ST-Z 230 and ST-X 230 lineup, both made for recreational players. The ST-G is an ultra-low spin design with a compact head in a classic pear shape.

More than just an update of the three-year-old ST-G the new ST-G has a smaller head offering better stability and dual (rather than triple) sliding sole weights. One sole weight track is perpendicular to the face, and one located along the rear of the sole towards the heel. The weight placement provides the choice of straight, draw or fade bias with further fine tuning coming from the adjustable hosel.

Mizuno says the ST-G is all about low ball spin in order to maximize distance and the primary feature to achieve that goal is the TPU covered stainless steel weight located in the sole near the clubface. This “Cortech Chamber” extends behind the leading edge and Mizuno says it takes impact stress from the face, makes for a more solid impact, and is especially helpful retaining ball speed when impact is below the center of the face.

There’s additional carbon fiber in the ST-G as well not just the crown but with a wraparound over the sole’s toe. Since carbon fiber weighs less than titanium overall the carbon fiber in the sole redistributes weight towards the center of the club near the weight tracks, a big plus for stability.

According to Mizuno’s Director of R&D, David Llewellyn, “The ST-G 440cc is very stable in the category of compact driver heads. The addition of Mizuno’s CORTECH Chamber greatly influenced our ability to create more consistent ball speeds across the face.”

mizuno-st-g-driver
Mizuno’s squat, powerful, player’s driver combines the scope to optimize launch and spin with the ball speed enhancements of Mizuno’s CORTECH Chamber. Two convergent weight tracks allow the ST-G to be anything from a low spin bomber, fade or draw biased or simply a more stable compact driver.

Pawleys Plantation Reopens

39

Pawleys Plantation Golf & Country Club, a Jack Nicklaus design renowned for its beauty and challenge, reopened October 2 after a comprehensive greens and bunkers restoration project.

Founders Group International (FGI), Pawleys’ parent company, contracted with Nicklaus Design Group and its Design Associate Troy Vincent to lead a project that has modernized one of the area’s most popular courses while maintaining the integrity of Nicklaus’ original work.

“Pawleys Plantation opened in the late 1980s, and it was time to look at the layout and reimagine what it could be,” said Steve Mays, President of Founders Group International.  “When you have a golf course that is associated with an icon like Jack Nicklaus, of course you want to incorporate his input and use the Nicklaus Design team to ensure the course continues to fulfill its potential going forward.”

Pawleys closed May 22 and golfers were welcomed back to a layout that received a dramatic facelift just as Myrtle Beach enters its peak fall season.

The seeds for the renovation of Pawleys were planted during a trip Nicklaus made to the acclaimed course in 2018 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its opening. The Golden Bear toured the layout, providing detailed notes on how to update best a design that has long been among South Carolina’s most popular.

At the heart of Nicklaus’ vision was a more playable layout for average golfers without diminishing the challenge for more skilled players.

Over time, trees had encroached on the course, narrowing fairways corridors beyond the original intent, and the size of the greens complexes had shrunk dramatically. To create more room, Vincent and his team eliminated the sprawling bunkers that lined more than half of the layout’s holes, replacing them with additional fairway space and native areas, and removed trees when necessary to create optimum conditions.

“We followed Jack’s ideas from 2018,” said Vincent, who has worked alongside the golf legend for 15 years. “It was our intention to make the course more playable, to give players more options, and we have carried that out. I think everyone will be happy.”

While there is more fairway to find, the challenge on and around the greens is more substantial as the number of pinnable areas significantly increased, placing greater demands on the short game.

“Working with the Nicklaus Group and Troy Vincent, who has done a fantastic job, has been a pleasure,” Mays said. “I believe we have brought the vision Jack Nicklaus outlined in 2018 to life. I can’t wait for everyone to come out and see the new Pawleys Plantation.”

Highlights of the project include:

  • Every green complex and the surrounding fringe was stripped, tilled and restored to its original specifications, netting nearly 40,000 square feet of additional putting surface.
  • The new greens feature TifEagle Bermudagrass, an ultradwarf strain that has performed exceedingly well at other FGI layouts, including the Grande Dunes Resort Course and River Hills Golf Club.
  • The collar around every green was resurfaced with Tahoma 31, a hearty variety of bermudagrass that can withstand close mowing and is resistant to mutation.
  • The sprawling bunkers on holes 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 10, 12, 16 and 18 were replaced by smaller fairway bunkers, native areas and expanded fairways, enhancing the course’s playability for mid to high handicappers without reducing the challenge for more skilled players.
  • In addition to the course work, Pawleys is undergoing a clubhouse renovation that will include building a new deck, offering stunning views of the course’s 18th hole, and opening a new restaurant that will cater to members and the public alike. The restaurant and deck are expected to open in the coming weeks.

Widely regarded as one of the prettiest courses in South Carolina, Pawleys features six back nine holes that play along a tidal marsh, a stretch highlighted by No. 13, a devilish par 3 that plays to a peninsula green surrounded by water and buffeted by winds off the nearby Atlantic Ocean.

Founders Group International owns 21 Myrtle Beach golf courses, making it one of the largest management companies in the Southeast, and FGI has aggressively reinvested in its courses in recent years. FGI has undertaken significant capital improvement projects at Grande Dunes Resort Course, TPC Myrtle Beach, Pine Lakes, Aberdeen Country Club, River Hills, Tradition Club, and the PineHills and Palmetto courses at Myrtlewood.

With additional capital improvement projects on the horizon, FGI is reinforcing its commitment to providing golfers with the best golf vacation experience possible.

Kiva Dunes: A Gorgeous Gulfside Golf Getaway

63

Very few people would disagree that Alabama is the home of genuine Southern hospitality, delicious shrimp & grits, and many of today’s most talented college football players.  Believe it or not, Alabama is also firmly entrenched as one of the world’s premier golf destinations – 12 months a year.  If you question Alabama’s status on golf’s popularity poll, please visit the state – sooner than later.  One of Alabama’s must-play golf destinations is Kiva Dunes, which is located in Gulf Shores, Alabama, perched along the banks of the Gulf of Mexico.  While the Gulf of Mexico is not visible from the golf course, golfers will feel the winds off the nearby Gulf.  Those winds are at the core of the Kiva Dunes golf experience, as they are Kiva’s greatest defense, as are many of its undulating greens.

Designed by 1976 U.S. Open champion Jerry Pate, Kiva Dunes is one of Pate’s finest creations.  At Kiva Dunes, when you try it, you won’t just like it — you’ll actually love it.  Since the course opened for play in 1995, Kiva Dunes has quickly established itself as one of Alabama’s finest golf courses, alongside FarmLinks at Purcell Farms in Sylacauga; Steelwood Country Club (another Pate design) in Loxley; and Ross Bridge, the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail course in Hoover, located near Birmingham.

In addition to Kiva Dunes being an awesome place for golf, it also has world-class accommodations and dining options.  In other words, the Kiva Dunes Golf & Beach Resort offers guests the ‘full enchilada’ of amenities – golf, salt water pool, hot tub, beach access, and the chance to eat every meal at the Kiva Grill.  Believe it or not, the Kiva Dunes Golf & Beach Resort is Alabama’s only golf resort along the Gulf of Mexico.  So, if you, your friends, and your family want to combine golf with beach time in Alabama, the Kiva Dunes Golf & Beach Resort is your only choice.  And it’s a great choice!

In 2015, the ownership at Kiva Dunes decided it was time for a facelift.  The goal was to transform a great golf course into a spectacular seaside spectacle.  In order to maintain the integrity of the original design, Pate was involved in the process.

Kiva Dunes
Kiva Dunes: The course is a superb links-style golf course and has a distinctive blend of signature par 3’s, challenging par 4’s, and risk/reward par 5’s.

According to Mark Stillings, Director of Golf & Real Estate Sales Associate at Kiva Dunes, the renovation process had three objectives:  redesign the bunkers to make them more player-friendly, level the tee boxes, and replace the greens.  By November 2015, that mission had been accomplished.  Since then, Kiva Dunes has been open for business – looking better than ever.  And it still does!

The sand bunkers have been rebuilt, the tee boxes have been squared and flattened, and the greens now feature Tifeagle turf.

“For the first 20 years, our most negative comments were on the bunkers,” adds Stillings.  “For the mid to high handicapper, the bunkers were too tough with too many plugged lies.  And, we weren’t happy with the grass on the greens so they were completely replaced.  But, we maintained the original contours.”

Also, the fairways were roto-tillered, where the organic matter beneath the fairways was removed in order to create a stronger turf with more consistent fairway lies.  Another big change was the removal of natural vegetative growth that had accumulated at the base of the trees and shrubs that border the fairways.

“We raised the canopy by removing much of the scrub oak along the ground,” notes Stillings.  “It was becoming a bottleneck issue in some parts of the course.”
This helped on holes where right-handed golfers pushed or sliced their tee shots to the right.  Instead of tee shots being lost in the overgrown flora, golfers were finding their tee shots which helped with player morale and the pace of play.

“Overall, our course renovations have improved the pace of play by 20-30 minutes a round,” says Stillings.

From a strategic perspective, the five key holes to focus on are the 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th, and 17th holes.  Within that stretch, you’ll play two par 3s, a pair of back-to-back par 5s, and a par 4 that can play short or long, depending on whether or not there’s a prevailing breeze out of the Southeast.  This sequence of holes will be your best chance to secure birdies.

When playing from the white tees, the 1st, 4th, 10th, and 11th holes are short par 4s, which can be played in many different ways, adding to the appeal of the Kiva Dunes golf experience.

At Kiva Dunes, the fairways have a more generous landing space than it appears from the tee boxes.  The greens are firm, fast, and true.  The extended closely-mown fringes around the greens give you many pitching, chipping, and putting options.  Water comes into play on seven of the holes, including the last three holes.  Make sure you bring your ‘A’ game tee-shot-swing to the par-3 17th.  At the 17th, a par three is an impressive score, especially when the pin is in the back part of the green.

The proximity of the 1st tee from the driving range allows golfers extra time to fine-tune their swing until the starter calls their names.  And the breeze off the nearby Gulf of Mexico provides a cooling effect under the year-round sunshine.

When Kiva Dunes opened for play in 1995, Golf Digest honored the course by ranking it as one of the top two public golf courses to open that year.  Now that the course has experienced a facelift, it’s an even more attractive venue.  Personally, I nominate Kiva Dunes for “Best Course To Play on Your Next Trip To Alabama.”  And, if you take the time to enjoy the Southern hospitality, eat the shrimp & grits, and watch some college football, all the better.

Pinehurst No. 10 Nears Completion and a No. 11 Will Follow

44

The Pinehurst area has dubbed itself “Cradle of American Golf,’’ and there’s no argument here – especially given what’s coming soon.

The Pinehurst Resort has announced that it’ll open its 10th course, called Pinehurst No. 10, on April 3, 2024.  Soon after that, the U.S. Golf Association will open its Golf House Pinehurst to the public on July 1, with the World Golf Hall of Fame to be ready soon after that. The USGA is moving its headquarters from New Jersey to Pinehurst, and the Hall of Fame is being shifted from St. Augustine, FL. Construction is well underway on both projects, to be located between The Carolina Hotel and the No. 1 tee of Pinehurst No. 2, the site of the 2024 U.S. Open in June.

Opening a 10th course may be more significant for the golf traveler – especially when you know that Pinehurst No. 11 is already on the drawing board. No. 10 also has USGA ties.

“Pinehurst gave us 40 acres of land over there, some of which will be used as our test pavilion for clubs and balls’ compliance,’’ said Janeen Driscoll, director of brand communications for the USGA.  Turfgrass research may also be done there, too.

First things first. No. 10 will have a good story to tell once it opens. Reservations are already being taken for players wanting to be among the course’s first players.  It’ll be the first original course built by Pinehurst in nearly three decades.

No. 10 is a Tom Doak design that was put together in a surprisingly short time on land that once housed The Pit, a Dan Maples design that was built in the early 1980s. Its revival was rumored for a long time. This is no revival story, however.

“The Pit was successful for a long period,’’ said Bob Farren, director of golf course & grounds management at Pinehurst.  “Traveling guys always wanted to play The Pit. It had its niche.  It was really a unique golf course – rugged, short, mounds of dirt. It was successful for 25 years.  Then Michael Strantz built Tobacco Road.’’

pinehurst_no_10
This old clubhouse contains the last remnants of The Pit course, which was closed in 2009

Farren describes Tobacco Road as “a larger-scale version of The Pit.’’

“It became the next must-play course, and that didn’t bode well for The Pit,  ‘’ said Farren. “In 2008-09, we owned the property by it, and The Pit had been closed.  Pinehurst bought it in 2010, and that brought us up to 900 acres over there.’’

For a decade, nothing was done with that land; then, the decision-makers came to an agreement.  Doak would build a new course there, but getting the project going wasn’t easy.

“Tom wanted to do the job but couldn’t do it until 2025 or 2026 (because of other projects he was working on),’’ said Farren.  “We wanted it done this year.  Tom said that could be done, but it must be finished by September.  We had doubts about that, what with getting permits and things like that.’’

Getting a crew together at short notice was a problem, too.  A New Jersey firm said it could have 65 people there in January, but two-thirds would have to be taken away (for other projects) in six months. No problem.  The work would begin. Clearing started in late December of 2022, and the real work started in January. Angela Moser came on site as Doak’s associate architect, and when we visited in mid-September, Pinehurst No. 10 looked very much like a soon-to-be intriguing golf course.

While that work was being done, the Pinehurst hierarchy was already making plans for No. 11.  Nothing’s been announced yet, but Farren is sure it will be coming.  The architects have been chosen, and preliminary work has begun. This project has an interesting history, as well.

“Robert Trent Jones (Sr.) had owned the property there, and we bought it,’’ said Farren. “Rees Jones (son of Robert Sr.) had built our No. 7 course and the first version of No. 4.’’

A Jones-designed course was planned for that property when Pinehurst bought the land.

“Then 9/11 happened.  We had wanted to build a village there, but then we had to put a chain on the gates,’’ said Farren.

That’s where the No. 11 project stands now, but probably not for long.

“No. 10 will be a concept for 3-5 years, then it’ll be a destination by itself with No. 11 beside it,’’ said Farren.  “We’ve got the routing on the ground. There’ll be cottages so people can stay on the property.’’

A tour of No. 10 with Farren verified his claim that “it’ll be an entirely different course than The Pit. It’ll be cut from the same fabric as No. 2 and No. 4 together – broad, expansive fairways, centipede turf rough with native landscape, and some wiregrass plants in the bunkers.’’

The 10th hole of No. 10 will be a 640-yard monster with lots of humps and bumps.  There won’t be much water on the course, mainly just an irrigation pond at No. 17, and when it opens, the course will be walking-only with caddies. With 75 feet of elevation change, it’ll make for a good walking course.

pinehurst_no_10
The par-4 eighth will be the most talked about hole on Pinehurst No. 10

Nos. 9 and 15 will share a tee placement.  There’ll be three types of bunkers, and they’ll be hazards with native plants in them. A bald eagle has made a home at No. 10 but the most talked about hole will be the par-4 eighth. The tee shot there will be over (or around) an unusually high mound, and four more such mounds surround the green. It’ll be a hole you won’t forget.

One thing won’t be ready at opening.  There won’t be a clubhouse until 2025. The last remnant of The Pit is its old clubhouse.  It’s still standing and has been used to house interns working on the course. For now, it’s a landmark, but down the road, probably not.

PXG 0317 T Irons

62

PXG has introduced the 0317 T irons, which fill out their line of irons for better players. The new models are a more forgiving, hollow foam-filled design that complements the 0317 ST (Super Tour) blades and 0317 CB (Cavity Back).

Better players wanting a blade-look-alike PXG iron but with more forgiveness than the 0317 ST or 0317 CB should take a look at the 0317 T model. The 8620 soft carbon steel body has a slightly larger profile. According to company testing, it produces excellent distance control, which is helped by the S COR polymer on the inside that provides head stability and reduces face flex at impact.

As with the other two models in this series, a professional may adjust the large back weight when the clubs are initially fit but not by the user after purchase.

The 0317 T iron faces are very thin and forged from HT 1770 maraging, i.e., very low carbon, stainless steel. Because the face weighs less, the head weight distribution is pushed towards the edges, which in turn raises the resistance to twisting or MOI, a proven way to make any iron more forgiving.

PXG Founder and CEO Bob Parsons said of the 0317 T irons, “From the materials and processes we use to the extremely tight tolerances we maintain; these clubs are built the way they are designed and are consistent club-to-club so that elite players can experience total control and more than a touch of forgiveness.”
