Robert Trent Jones Jr. updates his father’s public course, host of’74 PGA Championship

The Championship Course at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons, North Carolina—a Robert Trent Jones Sr. design that hosted the 1974 PGA Championship and the 1986 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship—reopened last Saturday after five months of implementing major portions of a long-range golf course refinements master plan prepared by RTJ Sr.’s son, Robert Trent Jones Jr., Chairman and Master Architect of Robert Trent Jones II (RTJ II) Golf Course Architects.

The master plan, prepared at the request of the Forsyth County Parks and Recreation Department, called for refinements to many elements of the golf course, notably all bunkers, tees, tree management, and resurfacing the greens with new turf.

“The changes are outstanding,” reports Michael Wilcox, Tanglewood Park’s Director of Golf. “The updated playability, strategy, and picturesque vistas will create a unique and memorable golf experience. Once the newly grassed areas are fully established, the Championship Course will once again be one of the premier public courses in the U.S. A new chapter at Tanglewood has begun.” The club has an additional 18 hole layout- the Reynolds,  a 6,537 yards, par 72, also designed by RTJ II, and a par 3 course.

“I give the officials in the Forsyth County government a big standing ovation for realizing the tremendous asset that the Championship Course at Tanglewood Park represents to their County Parks System,” says Bruce Charlton, President and Chief Design Officer of RTJ II. “Our intent was to update the course in keeping with the RTJ Sr.’s design philosophies while polishing this gem to meet the demands of today’s game. It has been a pleasure implementing our visions in collaboration with Richard Mandell, an ASGCA member based in Pinehurst, N.C.”The Championship course runs out to 7,101 yards, par 70.

Both Wilcox and Charlton noted the contributions of course superintendent Lee Barefoot, The Wadsworth Construction company led on this project by Matt Lohmann, and consultant Steve Johnson of Brown Golf Management.

Tanglewood Park is the former estate of Will and Katharine Reynolds. Now a public park, Tanglewood also offers fishing on two stocked lakes, pedal boats, tennis complex, an aquatic center, picnic shelters, horse stables, gardens and a trail system. SkyGolf Celebrates its 20th Anniversary with the Launch of the Limited Edition SkyCaddie SX500

4

In commemoration of the company’s 20th Anniversary and in appreciation of its over 1 million customers, SkyGolf®, maker of SkyCaddie®, the most trusted Rangefinder in Golf, recently released its Limited Edition SkyCaddie SX500 GPS handheld with much acclaim.  The SX500 is powerful, reliable, ruggedized, packed with stroke-saving technology and delivered with the largest and most visually stunning display among distance measuring devices in golf.

“Since 1998, SkyGolf has been dedicated to pioneering the use of GPS products to help golfers to improve their game.  SkyCaddie is known for its accuracy and dedication to course mapping on the same ground golfer’s play rather than thousands of miles away on a computer.  We believe that golfers can play better, play faster and have more fun, but only if they have distances they can trust in a readable, easy-to-use and intuitive interface,” said Jacqui Surman, SkyGolf Senior VP and COO. “We want golfers to play up to their full potential and have fun, too.  So, we combined our twenty years of experience with the comments and suggestions of our many loyal customers to create what we believe is the best SkyCaddie Handheld GPS ever.   And our customers must think so as well because we sold out immediately and in spite of increasing our manufacturing, orders have grown even faster.”

Here are just a few comments from those who ordered theirs early.

  • “The SX500 talks the language of golf and answers the questions you were about to ask.” – L. Nicoll, first time user
  • “The features and screen size make the SX500 a true yardage book replacement. After 42 holes of golf, I still had 66% battery life left. The screen was readable even wearing sunglasses.” – T. Hoyer, SkyCaddie user for 11 years
  • “SX500 sets the new standard for golf distance measuring devices. I love it!  It’s simple to use, with a clear display, even in bright sunlight. Start-up is quick: it’s easy to set up your round and update course maps via Wi-Fi. Accuracy is superb. You can see everything about the hole you’re playing laid out in front of you, especially hazards which are hidden by mounds or in fairway dips.” – L. Loberman, SkyCaddie user for 7 years
  • “The SX500 is Awesome, Large screen easy to use, recharges fast, charges last longer.  Played two full rounds still had 57% battery.  Accurate.  And best customer support in the industry.” – P. Shepperley, SkyCaddie user for 12 years.

With its 5-inch, full high-definition touch screen driven by an ultra-fast multi-core processor, the SkyCaddie® SX500 is the most powerful way to measure yardage while providing the very “best view” in golf with vivid graphics and super large numbers you can easily read and most importantly…TRUST!

It is loaded with powerful, but easy-to-use new features including: SkyCaddie PinPoint® technology to support distances to daily pin positions; Dynamic HoleVue™ re-orients the entire highly-detailed hole map, automatically, so golfers can now see the entire hole from their point-of-view; HoleVue® Plus providing easy “pinch and zoom” access to up to 40 geo-referenced integrated targets per hole; and Dynamic RangeVue® providing customized ranging rings to match up with a golfer’s personal club ranges.

The SkyCaddie® SX500 comes in a highly water-resistant, rugged design to stand up to most anything that comes its way on the course. With the largest battery in the industry, the SX500 is ready for an extra round or two. Using multi-constellation navigation satellite systems, the SX500 provides enhanced accuracy and overall better performance under tough conditions or tree cover.

Wi-Fi connectivity cuts the cord to streamline application updates and allows golfer to get the latest course information on demand without connecting to a computer. The SkyCaddie® SX500 comes preloaded and “ready-to-play” with over 35,000 ground-verified, error-corrected courses without the short-cuts taken by the competition. Only SkyCaddie walks each course to record thousands of points with sub-meter precision that allows golfers to know and trust critical distances and manage their game better.

The powerful design of the SX500 includes a host of Intelligent Automation™ features such as Auto-Course Selection, Auto-Hole Advance, Auto-Zoom, Auto-Distance, Auto Green Depth and Rotating Auto-View making it “touch-free” from the parking lot to the 19th hole.

The SX500 provides a host of “patented” technology developed by SkyCaddie to help its customers play golf like a Pro.

With SkyCaddie’s patented IntelliGreen® technology, the exact shape of the green automatically rotates to match your angle of approach to provide all of the distances you need to hit more greens and avoid 3-putts. This proprietary feature gives you a chance to turn every shot into a scoring opportunity by providing front carry and back distances, depth of green, and distances to any other point on the green — simultaneously. Available on select courses, IntelliGreen® Pro is a dynamically-enhanced version of IntelliGreen that adds the ability to display major tiers, contours, false fronts, and mounds from your angle of approach to the green.

Only available on the SX500, the new and patented Dynamic HoleVue™ feature rotates the fairway and orients the green from your current position and angle of attack as you move from the tee to the green. Now, you see everything between you and the green instantly without touching a button and get the distances you need to avoid hazards and play your best golf. The group behind will play through if you try that with a laser!

With the SkyCaddie® SX500, you learn quickly how far you hit each club. Customize RangeVue® by entering your personal club yardages. Then as you play, you will see your club range next to the RangeVue ring on every part of the course for much improved shotmaking to fairways, layups and greens. RangeVue® with Club Ranges provides added confidence on every shot to avoid hazards and dial-in approach shots for more birdie putts.

SkyCaddie PinPoint® will obsolete lasers by providing the ability to get distances to the pin while getting all the benefits of IntelliGreen. Simply enter pin sheet or zone information into the SkyCaddie® SX500 to get distances to the hole, front, center and back PLUS the depth and true shape green… AND all of this information is on one screen that changes automatically based on your current position and angle of approach from anywhere on the course…whether you can see the flag or not. With the SX500, you get more information, from more places, easier and faster and without aiming!

The SkyCaddie® SX500 also provides digital scoring options for Stroke and Stableford with handicapping and tracks total putts and fairways hit. Turn the SX500 to the left or right and the AutoView feature displays a full 9-hole Digital Scorecard instantly in landscape mode.

More features of the SX500 include: Shot Distance Measurement to help track how far the ball goes and help golfers to learn club distances; Target List View to give a quick list of all the targets ahead of on the hole; and Tee Box Selection, Gender Selection, Dual Green Support with a yards or meters option, Stat Tracking and a North Indicator. The SkyCaddie SX500 also includes a 13-megapixel camera, enabling photos to be taken during the round and uploaded to the user’s SkyGolf 360™ online account.

As with all SkyGolf e-golf products the SkyCaddie SX500 is built around the SkyGolf 360 platform, providing unmatched wireless connectivity for golfers to upload performance data captured during their round. SkyGolf 360 allows golfers to keep all performance data regardless of whether it comes from a rangefinder, a swing sensor, a performance tracker or a launch monitor in one place rather than scattered among various competitors with incompatible platforms.  A single platform is not only to the golfer’s advantage, but it is also to the advantage of a teacher, PGA Professional or reseller to be able to offer all available tools a golfer can need to improve their performance from one source with the confidence their customers are getting the very best solution.

The SkyCaddie SX500 retails for $399.95. In the U.S., the SX500 comes with the introductory offer of a 1-year Double Eagle Worldwide Membership valued at $59.95

Boca Lago Country Club Marks New Beginning With Golf Course Renovation

11

Boca Lago Country Club is nearing completion of a total golf course renovation, part of a comprehensive transformation of member amenities designed to position the private club among the most desirable in Boca Raton.

The 27-hole golf experience at Boca Lago has been reconfigured under the direction of Jan Bel Jan Golf Course Design, Inc. and golf course superintendent George Redshaw, GCSAA. Scheduled to be unveiled in November, the redevelopment of the South, East and West nines includes redesigned greens, repositioned bunkering in the fairways and around the green complexes, as well as reshaped and rearranged teeing grounds.

“We have incorporated the best elements of the original golf course design with a revitalized approach to strategy and playability,” Bel Jan, ASGCA, said of the renovation. “We provided multiple choices of how to play each hole, with the lakes still playing a pivotal role in the character of all three nines.”

Established in 1975, the Boca Lago Country Club golf course was originally designed by golf architects Bruce Devlin and Robert von Hagge. The current renovation includes modernizing the golf course infrastructure: a new irrigation and pump system has been installed; fairway drainage has been enhanced; and cart paths have been refreshed or removed.

“The complete revitalization of the infrastructure will elevate the club experience for current and new members and guests,” Boca Lago General Manager Steve O’Neill said of the $9-million project. “The golf course has always been considered a thoroughly enjoyable layout and the renovation will place Boca Lago among the best private golf clubs in the region.”

Walking will be encouraged when the course re-opens, provided pace of play is not impacted.

Boca Lago Country Club offers a variety of competitively-priced equity, non-proprietary full and seasonal memberships in golf or tennis/social classifications.

The South, East and West nine routings all offer five teeing areas. Some of the back-teeing grounds have been lengthened to provide significant challenges to more skilled golfers, while each of the four other teeing grounds are designed to fairly engage golfers with slower clubhead speeds.

The South will play from 3,212 to 2,060 yards; the East will play from 3,374 to 2,104 yards; the West will play from 2,955 to 1,742 yards. Flexibility in yardages for special events, wind direction and other conditions has been considered into the tee designs, locations and sizes, as well as the landing areas and bunker positioning.

All 27 new greens are being planted with Tif-Eagle Bermudagrass, while the fairways will be Latitude 36 Bermudagrass, and the teeing grounds will feature Tif-Grande Bermudagrass.

Significant to the project is the major expansion of the practice facilities to include more full-swing space, a superior practice putting area and dedicated short-game area, as well as two practice holes that can be played in multiple ways. The practice areas will sport similar grass types as the golf course.

“The practice holes will be a great asset to golfers who want to hone their games,” Bel Jan said, “as well as to those who are learning the game and everyone in between.”

Besides the golf course renovation, Boca Lago Country Club expects to complete several other projects late this year, including a complete interior restoration of the clubhouse, new outdoor dining areas, renovated banquet facilities, and refurbished tennis center.

Located in the heart of Palm Beach County, Boca Lago Country Club spans 250 acres of pristine grounds, including 50 acres of mirror quality lakes. Tropical landscaping and natural surroundings are heavily populated with some of the most beautiful bird wildlife in South Florida. One of the finest tennis clubs in South Florida, the Rick Macci Tennis Academy, makes its home at Boca Lago.  The club also has two swimming pools, a fitness facility, and three unique member dining options.

“The investment in Boca Lago Country Club is generating a great deal of excitement among our members,” O’Neill said. “We are looking forward to everyone in the area experiencing the transformation of the Club.”

Inspired by JACK-Designed for YOU- Nicklaus Apparel Launches Fall 18 Black Label Collection

1

No name is more synonymous with greatness in the sport of golf than Jack Nicklaus, and no single person has changed the face of the sport of golf than Jack, the player, the course designer, the philanthropist, World Golf Hall of Fame member and good-will ambassador.

Jack Nicklaus branded clothing features the iconic ‘Golden Bear’ logo. Nicklaus adopted the moniker early in his record setting professional career launched 55 years ago this year and one considered today to be the benchmark for greatness. Australian sportswriter Don Lawrence of the Melbourne Age was asked by IMG Founder Mark McCormack what he thought of the young Nicklaus and Don responded by saying “he looked like a big, cuddly golden bear.” Jack had attended Upper Arlington High School in his native Ohio, and the school’s mascot was the Golden Bears. The words by Lawrence and being a Golden Bear in high school combination inspired Nicklaus to adopt the nickname and later the logo.

Jack Nicklaus Apparel, developed in collaboration with global fashion leader Perry Ellis International, is pleased to announce the release of its Fall 18 Black Label Collection. Featuring three unique collections-The Originals, The Majors and the 19th Hole- the Fall clothing line is designed as a lifestyle collection with broad appeal to golfers and the styling public. “We have truly created a lifestyle collection with international appeal that can be enjoyed both on and off the golf course,” said Nicklaus Senior Vice President Andy O’Brien. “We work very closely with the talented design team at Perry Ellis and our Italian apparel partner, taking inspiration and feedback from our green grass Nicklaus Design courses in the United States, as well as our licensees in markets around the world, to develop innovative and fashion-forward men’s and ladies’ lines. Pinehurst Resort Debuts the Reimagination of No. 4

3

Pinehurst Resort & Country Club has unveiled a completely reimagined No. 4 course this fall, the work of renowned golf course architect Gil Hanse.

Visually stunning from tee to green, exposed sand areas, vast cross bunkers and native wire grass meld with the site’s rolling topography and natural ridge lines to create dramatic vistas and strategic options on every hole. Hanse’s design of No. 4 is a brand new and bold expression of pure, timeless North Carolina Sandhills golf.

“We’ve returned the original landscape to the course, and from there, we then created the features, slopes and green locations,” says Hanse, designer of Streamsong Black and the 2016 Rio Olympics venue. “We believe golfers are going to appreciate how No. 4 fits into the Pinehurst lineup and elevates the entire golf experience.”

The par-5, 9th hole is a shining example of how No. 4 has been reinvented through Hanse’s vision and touch.  More than 25 pot bunkers are replaced with sprawling, sandy native areas, and a massive crossbunker spans the width of the fairway, connecting with nearby holes and tying together the natural landforms. Green complexes throughout the course have been lowered to fit the landscape, and are complemented by Hanse’s unique bunker designs.

“Among Pinehurst’s nine golf courses, No. 4 has always held a special place in the resort’s history,” says Bob Dedman, Jr., in speaking for the Dedman family, the owners of the resort. “We entrusted Gil and his team to interpret and execute the vision of making No. 4 more natural and authentic to the Sandhills of North Carolina. Gil, Jim and the team have been great to work with and have far exceeded our expectations.”

The USGA has already named No. 4, along with No. 2, as co-hosts for the 2019 U.S. Amateur Championship. It marks the third time the prestigious event will be played at Pinehurst and the first since 2008. Stroke play will be contested on both courses with the match play championship held on No. 2. Hanse says this is exactly the type of symbiotic relationship that should exist between the two courses.

“No. 4 is a companion in the landscape, but it is not a tribute to No. 2 in the features,” Hanse says. “The greens are different, the approaches are different and we wanted to take advantage of the natural landforms, which are much more dramatic than those on No. 2.”

Completion of No. 4 is bittersweet for Hanse, who spent parts of the past two years onsite with partner Jim Wagner and his construction crew, “The Cavemen,” working both on No. 4 and Pinehurst’s short course, The Cradle.  He describes living in the Dornoch Cottage – Donald Ross’s home in Pinehurst – as “one of the most meaningful things that has ever happened to me.”

The reimagination of No. 4 is the latest in a series of bold moves for one of the world’s most iconic golf destinations. The restoration of No. 2, acquisition of the Jack Nicklaus designed No. 9, the opening of The Cradle and an expansion of the 18-hole putting course Thistle Dhu are complete, as are restorative enhancements to Pinehurst No. 3. The Pinehurst Brewing Company has opened to rave reviews, located in the village’s historic steam plant.

“There’s never been a more exciting time to visit Pinehurst,” says Tom Pashley, President of Pinehurst Resort. “All of the recent changes and enhancements have resulted in a new energy level and fun factor that’s contagious. I can’t wait for visitors to see the stunning transformation with the new Pinehurst No. 4.

About Pinehurst Resort & Country Club

Bobby Weed Completes Renovation at Long Cove

2

Bobby Weed Golf Design announced that its renovation of the golf course at Long Cove Club, in Hilton Head Island, S.C. is now complete.  The course, originally designed by Pete Dye, opened in 1981. This renovation project is especially significant to Bobby Weed Golf Design.

“Long Cove was my first assignment with Pete and the genesis of Bobby Weed Golf Design,” Weed said. “After having met Pete at Amelia Island Plantation in the mid 70s, Long Cove was the beginning of my career in design and construction, and of my nearly 40 years relationship with Pete. To be back at Long Cove has been very special for Bobby Weed Golf Design and to me personally.”

Alongside contractor MacCurrach Golf, Bobby Weed Golf Design commenced construction on April 20. The renovation work on the par-71 7,000-yard layout at the private residential community

The scope of the project includes:

  • Refurbishing all bunkers and native waste areas with new drain lines, sand and coquina shell material;
  • Re-grassing greens and fairways with updated varieties;
  • Replacing corroded metal lake connectors and drain lines throughout the golf course;
  • Reconstructing original bulkheads suing the detail from 1981;
  • Repair and overlay of cart paths;
  • Select tree removal and landscaping.

“For me,” Weed said, “returning to Long Cove conjures up fond memories of insane hours of construction, working alongside Pete Dye every day and fashioning a course out of the Lowcountry with a passionate team of golf junkies. And doing all of this while covered in sunscreen, no-see-ums and chiggers, and loving every minute!”

Weed affirmed that the original construction crew of the Long Cove golf course is rightfully touted as one of the most eccentric and legendary in the modern era. Weed and Dye assembled a crew of college graduates, interns and low-handicap golfers for the project. Many Long Cove alumni later embarked on their own careers in the golf design business, including Weed, Tom Doak, PB Dye, Scott Pool and Ron Farris.

Ben Hogan Golf Equipment Company Debuts Ft. Worth WHITE Irons

New Model Joins the Popular Ft. Worth BLACK Irons;
Nickel-Chrome Clubhead Finish Irons Now Available

Ben Hogan Golf Equipment Company (BHGEC) has introduced Ft. Worth WHITE Irons, a complimentary line of custom, hand-crafted forged irons that answer widespread golfer demand for a traditional nickel-chrome clubhead finish in their blade-style iron model.

The new irons join the popular Ft. Worth BLACK irons, one of Ben Hogan Golf’s most successful product lines, which feature a unique Diamond Black Metal (DBM) finish. The new ‘white’ irons are available for purchase immediately without retail mark-up thanks to BHG’s proven direct-to-consumer sales and distribution model that offers unprecedented pricing for high-performance, custom-made forged irons.

“The Ft. Worth White Irons are illustrative of how Ben Hogan Golf Equipment Company interacts with and listens to its customers,” said Scott White, President and CEO, Ben Hogan Golf Equipment Company.  “On the heels of our sales success with the Ft. Worth Black Irons,  we found many ‘traditionalists’ who wanted to play this iron design with the standard nickel-chrome finish, so we accommodated them with this launch.”

White adds, “As with the Ft. Worth BLACK irons, the WHITE irons will be custom-built clubs to individual golfer’s specifications. But, most importantly, unlike other brands who launch a product that is not readily available, our exclusive factory-direct business model allows us to put these irons in the hands of golfers immediately and at hundreds of dollars less than they would pay for competitive products through green-grass and retail channels.”

The Ft. Worth White Irons feature a traditional forged blade design that is engineered for serious, accomplished players seeking a rare blend of feel, consistency, accuracy and forgiveness. Extensive player and machine testing validate that the irons generate a more penetrating ball flight on scoring irons, higher initial launch angles on long irons and better distance control on off-center hits, when compared with competitive irons. This is a direct result of dual Dynamic Progressive Weighting and Adaptive Perimeter Weighting Systems, which allow Ben Hogan engineers to optimize the size, shape and depth of the unique ‘depression cavity’ on the rear of each club head.

The new Ft. Worth White Irons also feature proprietary enhanced V-Sole® Technology, which is the most versatile sole in golf and has long been a trademark of Ben Hogan irons and wedges. It combines a high bounce leading edge and low bounce trailing edge on the sole and allows for easy manipulation of the club head no matter the lie and without changing the loft. The bounce angles on the Ft. Worth White Irons have been re-engineered slightly on each club head to eliminate ‘grab’ by the turf, especially on less-than-full shots.

Further, the Ben Hogan Golf Equipment Company’s signature PreciseLoft® System has been simplified in the Ft. Worth WHITE Irons. While the Company remains committed to consistent 4-degree loft gaps between each iron for optimal distance gapping and to minimize loft ‘compression’ at the short end of the set, the Ft. Worth WHITE Irons will only be offered in one loft matrix. The mid-high launch profile (22 to 46-degrees) is preferred by the vast majority of Ben Hogan iron players.  Ft. Worth White Irons will be stamped with traditional numbers (#4 – PW) on the sole.

As with all Ben Hogan irons, the Ft. Worth WHITE Irons can be customized at no charge and golfers can specify length, lie, loft and grips (standard or mid-sized) as well as their choice of a variety of steel and graphite shafts.

The Ft. Worth White Irons are available for purchase at www.BenHoganGolf.com exclusively. True to the company’s innovative Factory-Direct distribution and pricing strategy, they are sold direct-to-consumers for $700.00 per seven-piece set (#4 iron – Pitching Wedge). Moreover, the Company offers a Trade-UP program where golfers can offset the cost of their purchase by selling used equipment back to the Company.
