Puma’s 2019 Collection Introduces Stylish Spring & Summer Style

17

NEW TECHNICAL FABRICATIONS FOR THE PERFECT BLEND OF ON, OFF-COURSE WEAR

PUMA Golf, a leader in golf apparel innovation, design and style, introduced today its Spring Summer 2019 apparel and accessories collection for men, women and junior golfers. The SS’19 collection features streetwear inspired designs blended with PUMA’s heritage performance gear for the ultimate in comfort and style that wears well both on and off course.

SS’19 introduces fresh styles, graphics and spring color stories, combined with cutting-edge technical elements including ALTERKNIT, 3D knit textured fabrics and FUSIONYARN Flex, a crafted blend of performance and natural fibers for the perfect fusion of everyday comfort, distinct style and on-course performance.

This season’s new take on the popular FUSIONYARN fabric, adds elastane fibers for greater range of motion, an update first requested by Rickie Fowler during a photo shoot last winter. The new FUSIONYARN Flex fabric, with four-way stretch, blends the softness and breathability of cotton with the moisture-wicking properties and durability of polyester, delivering a high-performance fusion of synthetic and natural fibers that dries fast, looks stylish and adds comfort in any setting. FUSIONYARN Flex is utilized in three polos in the men’s collection, the Verdant Polo, The Faraday Polo and the Pin High Polo; and on the women’s side, in the Burst Into Bloom Polo and the Race Day Polo.

In its SS’19 collection PUMA is unveiling ALTERKNIT, a technique that delivers pattern through 3D knit jacquard versus a more traditional graphic print. The knit structure in the ALTERKNIT pieces provides added breathability for all-day comfort. ALTERKNIT is utilized in three key pieces in the men’s collection, the Prismatic Polo, the Radius Polo and the Palms Polo; and on the women’s side, in the Burst into Bloom Polo.

“PUMA Golf is known for bold color and graphics. Our goal this season was to evolve and elevate the line by adding some subtle prints that were still visually interesting and developing a new execution for the bolder graphics by using a tonal, 3D knit structure as opposed to a more traditional print,” said Kristin Hinze, Global Head of Apparel for PUMA Golf. “The result is a collection that is true to the DNA of PUMA Golf, but more refined, designed to be performance-ready but easily transitions off the course.”

In addition to elevated polos & layering pieces, SS’19 delivers first-in-class bottoms, introducing the aptly named Jackpot pant & short, focusing on the elements needed to hit the pant jackpot – fabric, fit and function. These modern pants, feature a moisture-wicking polyester fabric, stretch-mesh waistband and are designed to fit and drape perfectly. The Jackpot 5 Pocket Pant will be available in nine colors, including a new pale pink, peacoat, white, black, orange, chocolate brown, quiet shade, surf the web, and Ashley blue; the Jackpot Shorts will come in 14 different colors, including pale pink, fuchsia purple, blue azur and many more.

“The Jackpot pant incorporates the ‘Best Of’ when it comes to bottoms – a great fit, four-way stretch fabric for maximum range of motion and a new lightweight mesh stretch waistband for extreme comfort. We’re confident this is the best pant in golf,” added Hinze. “The fit and fabric are polished enough for the office, and the performance and comfort are unparalleled on course.”

PUMA’s new line will continue the brand’s focus on ladies, taking inspiration from athleisure, infusing performance fabrics and silhouettes that work well both on and off the course. The collection will see new colors and styles added to the brand’s popular women’s bottoms that incorporate PWRSHAPETM Technology, engineered to provide a smooth, slimming effect and deliver the ultimate in support and comfort from a bonded waistband and flatlock seam construction. A key addition to the women’s line up for 2019 is the tennis-inspired PWRSHAPE On Repleat Skirt which will come in four fresh colorways, including Black, Pale Pink, Peacoat and Bright White.

The above-mentioned styles, along with the rest of the SS’19 collection, are designed to seamlessly transition from the office, to the golf course and everywhere in between, while providing premium comfort and feel every step of the way.

The SS’19 Collection, available now online and at retail, will be worn on Tour by the likes of style icons such as Rickie Fowler, Bryson DeChambeau and Lexi Thompson throughout the 2019 golf season. For more information on the entire collection visit pumagolf.com.

Jan Stephenson’s New Golf Course Provides a Boost for Veterans, First Responders

32

By: Len Ziehm

PALM HARBOR, Florida – Jan Stephenson is about to go into the World Golf Hall of Fame. That’s not surprising given that she won 16 LPGA tournaments including three majors, among them the 1982 LPGA Championship and 1983 U.S. Women’s Open. She also has 41 world-wide wins including 10 titles on the LPGA’s Legends circuit. That’s a lot of wins – but there’s more.

She’s also involved in tons of outside projects, more – in fact – than virtually every other touring pro, man or woman. And, one of those projects is particularly special. On April 1, 2017, Stephenson – through her Crossroads Foundation – bought a golf course.

It’s not all that surprising for a touring golf professional of Stephenson’s stature to own – or at least partly own – a course somewhere. Again, though, Stephenson’s course is particularly special. She bought it to help others. That’s why it is officially owned by Stephenson’s foundation.

“We wanted to make it a veterans’ golf facility,’’ said Michael Vandiver, executive vice president of the foundation. “We didn’t acquire it for personal gain. We wanted a facility to accommodate veterans and first responders.’’

Many of Stephenson’s golf memorabilia items have been used to decorate the clubhouse but there’s much more to her involvement than that.

Though her purchase of Tarpon Woods Golf Club was no secret, Stephenson has doubts that even her fellow members of the LPGA Legends Tour realize just what the purchase meant.

“I’ve always had a charity,’’ said Stephenson. “I had a junior program before this, but now juniors are well taken care of. There’s lots of programs for them. I had been an ambassador for the disabled and the blind and this is for the veterans. “I would like to teach them all about golf and to even help them to have a career. This place became available, and we could devote it all to them.’’

Tarpon Woods was built as a high-end private club in 1971 with Lane Marshall the course designer. In the 1990s it was called the Lost Oaks of Innisbrook and owned by the flourishing upscale Innisbrook Resort about eight miles away.

Over the years it was particularly popular when the New York Yankees held their spring training nearby. The Yankees’ owner, George Steinbrenner, particularly liked to play the course. It remains a par-72 that measures 6,613 yards from the back tees but lots of things changed, and not for the better, as Tarpon Woods was converted to a public venue under different owners.

The club was certainly no hot spot when Stephenson’s foundation took it over.

“It was a sand pit. It had no grass,’’ recalled Stephenson. “No one was playing it, and it was losing a lot of money. Its reputation was bad. The maintenance irrigation system didn’t work and the clubhouse had only two lights that worked.’’

Then things got worse. Hurricane Irma hit, and that slowed down the restoration efforts. Those were being done by with a hands-on approach that even included Stephenson coming over to trim hedges and pull weeds. Her brother Greg, who is a first responder, spent a few months painting the clubhouse.

Vandiver, who is also president of club manufacturer Razor Golf, and his wife Diane are also deeply involved in the day-to-day operations. Stephenson is also part owner of Razor Golf and Vandiver also works with Jan Stephenson Events – a side business that puts on concerts and other entertainment events.

Tarpon Woods is another of their joint ventures, and it’s been a rewarding one as public play is picking up and thousands of veterans have already benefitted from visiting there.

“We’ve got a long way to go, but people have thanked us for what we’ve done already,’’ said Stephenson. “We’ll probably get 1,400 rounds a week in the winter. A lot of people wouldn’t have played here, but now they’ve seen it’s in pretty good shape and it’s a value ($46 per round in peak season). ‘’

The club has all brand new golf carts, and veterans and first responders get 20 percent off on greens fees as well as discounts in the restaurant and well-stocked pro shop.

Stephenson has organized monthly clinics for the disabled and about 50 – ranging in age from 14 to 80 – turned out for a clinic designed for blind golfers. She has also hosted a fund-raiser – the Jan Stephenson Invitational Pro-Am – that included Robert Gamez and Cindy Figg-Currier, a couple of former tour players.

Vandiver is tackling a bunker renovation in an innovative way. He’s trying to raise $90,000 via corporate and individual donations. He says one bunker can be renovated at a cost of $2,360 but he’d like to find 18 corporations willing to donate $5,000 for the project. The bunker renovation isn’t just for a cosmetic improvement. The bunkers need to be re-designed to accommodate the disabled golfers.

The Australia-born Stephenson, who has lived in nearby New Port Richey the last seven years and obtained her U.S. citizenship the same month she acquired the course, has another goal for Tarpon Woods. She wants a building to be built specifically for teaching golf to the veterans.

Golfweek’s Annual Rankings List the Top Resort Courses in the United States

Five Pinehurst area golf courses have been named to Golfweek’s 2019 Top 100 Resort Courses in the United States. The courses (with rankings in parenthesis) include: Pinehurst No. 2 (#3); Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club (#29); Pine Needles Club and Lodge (#37); Tobacco Road (#59) and Pinehurst No. 8 (#69). The rankings were published in the magazine’s Ultimate Guide for resort and residential courses.

“Golfers love lists and they love to play the top courses in the country,” said Phil Werz, President and CEO for the Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. “There’s no question Pinehurst No. 4 is a top 100 course as well, but with its redesign this year, timing did not allow for it to be included. No. 4 is part of the list in our mind and will rank highly next year. Overall, our destination is synonymous with world-class golf and with 40 courses within 15 miles of each other here, we are the proud ‘Home of American Golf’.”

Every year, Golfweek enlists an elite team of course raters, which currently boasts more than 850 evaluators and surveys more than 3,600 courses – grading each nominated course on the basis of 10 strict standards of evaluation. Collectively, the raters turned in more than 75,000 votes to compile their 2019 best courses lists.

Pinehurst area golf courses are no strangers to the national and global stage when it comes to major championships. In 2019, Pine Needles will host the U.S. Senior Women’s Open, May 16-19. Pinehurst No. 2 and No. 4 will welcome competitors for the U.S. Amateur, August 12-18. Both of those events are sanctioned by the United States Golf Association (USGA).

BallenIsles Country Club Completes $35 Million Clubhouse Renovation

39

The BallenIsles Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens took luxury up a few notches this year with an expansion and renovation of its clubhouse to 115,000 square feet incorporating world class amenities that redefine scale and style.

The Clubhouse has been redesigned to capture vistas of the famed East Course where Jack Nicklaus and many other PGA legends competed for major championships. From the spectacular Grand Lobby with vaulted ceilings and clerestory windows to the iconic Harry’s Lounge in tribute to its long tenured, well storied PGA Professional, Harry Pezzullo, the sweeping architectural changes maximize both indoor and outdoor usage and views. Dining and social experiences include an expanded Circle 100 Main Dining Room, a new and modern upscale restaurant called Evolution, and the spectacular addition of The BallenIsles Grille overlooking the 18th green. Fondly dubbed The B.I.G. it features a blend of gastropub cuisine and 18 TVs for never missing a game or golf tournament.

Harry’s has been expanded with an additional 9,000 square feet of outdoor verandas for dining, relaxing and spending quality time with friends and family on the Grand and Golf Terraces. Other accoutrements include two new kitchens and an expansion of the stylish Men’s and Ladies Card, Locker and Meeting Rooms. In all BallenIsles will have seven dining venues available to its members by year’s end including Bistro 105, Rendezvous Room and the Cabana.

“The entire project was built around the very simple idea of providing something special for everyone. This redesign and expansion perfectly complements our state-of-the-art sports complex and spa.

And when a project of this complexity and size comes in on time and on budget, it is icing on the cake for our membership. We are really proud of all who have contributed to the success of the renovation which we will enjoy for many years to come,” said BallenIsles Board of Directors President, Michael Muntner. None of this would have been possible without the tireless efforts of the club’s member volunteers who had the vision, expertise and energy to bring the project to fruition.

Last year, BallenIsles Country Club named Troon Prive’ Division President Ryan Walls as its new general manager/COO to oversee the $35 million renovation. Ryan is a 20-year member of the PGA of America and a former Horton Smith Award winner. Since joining Troon in 1996, his operational leadership posts have included directing the company’s Australia, Asia & Pacific divisions. Prior to his appointment as President of Troon Prive’ in 2016, Walls served as Senior Vice President of Operations, overseeing a number of multi course properties and Troon’s Sales and Marketing Department.

“In working with Ryan through his corporate support as President of Troon Prive’, the Board was impressed with his broad range of experience,” said Dr. Jack Cook, former President of the Board of Directors. “He has been involved with the construction and redevelopment of numerous golf courses and clubhouses, and has a reputation for building and leading strong teams. He is strategic in nature with an acute eye for detail. These qualities the Board believes to be critical to our club’s future success and sustainability.”

“We have a diverse membership and this new clubhouse and its amenities offer something for all. It is stylish and comfortable at the same time, providing opportunities for socializing, and most importantly, multiple dining opportunities that are valued highly by our members. The Board and designers listened to what our members wanted and delivered on it,” said Walls. “This renovation continues our path of reinforcing BallenIsles as the leading country club community, focused on quality and enjoyment for the membership.”

Innisbrook Shows Off Newly Renovated South Course

19

Innisbrook, a Salamander Resort, celebrated the re-opening of its popular and challenging South Course after a six-month renovation of the putting surfaces on all 18 holes, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on the first tee Friday, November 30th. The South is one of four championship layouts at the beautiful resort tucked away from the maddening crowds in the Pinellas County bedroom community of Palm Harbour, just north of Clearwater, Florida.

The renovation honored the original design of Course Architect Larry Packard and included the practice green behind the Osprey Clubhouse and the practice putting surface at the Innisbrook Golf Institute, adjacent to the Clubhouse. Using a no-till method of turf replacement, the work has resulted in a firmer, more consistent playing surface. The greens were planted with TifEagle Bermuda Grass- the same exceptional putting surface the PGA TOUR professionals rave about annually during the Valspar Championship on Innisbrook’s famed Copperhead Course. This year’s event will be held March 20-24th with last year’s winner, Englishman Paul Casey, defending.

“We couldn’t be more excited to stand here today, knowing we now offer four championship courses with the same top-tier putting experience that is preferred by the amazing players we watch all season long on the PGA TOUR,” said Innisbrook’s Managing Director Mike Williams. Last year we completed this same renovation on the North Course (also known as Baby Copperhead) with great success. Now with the completion of the greens of the South Course, golfers will enjoy a consistent putting surface on all 72 holes of golf at the resort. These improvements further underscore the investment and commitment to excellence we have from Owner Sheila Johnson and Salamander Hotels & Resorts.”

The renovation project also included reconditioning of the bunkers and green surrounds, clearing all storm canals and trimming and pruning trees and shrubbery to reduce shading. Sizes of some greens were also expanded where shrinkage had occurred over the years, allowing for additional pin placements now.

Innisbrook Resort is also in the process of completing an extensive room remodeling project that includes all guest rooms and suites which is expected to finish in early 2019 ready for the Valspar Championship.

Innisbrook is situated on 900 wooded acres of rolling hills in the St. Petersburg/Clearwater area on Florida’s Gulf Coast, just 30 minutes from Tampa International Airport. Besides the 72 holes of championship golf and spacious accommodations, Innisbrook has four restaurants, three bars, 11 tennis courts, six heated swimming pools including the Loch Ness Monster, the luxurious Salamander Spa with 12 treatment rooms, state-of-the-art Fitness Center, a nature preserve, and three conference halls with over 100,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor meeting and function space.
