Fernandina Beach Golf Club is the oldest golf club on the Island with three 9-hole courses designed by the Head Professional who was there at the time. In 1956 they opened with a single 9-hole layout much to the applause of the golfing residents who had to travel north to Georgia or south to Jacksonville to play a round. All three nines stretch out over 3,000 yards on a flat canvas of land but complement each other when combined to make a full 18 which allows for additional play that the locals love. Golf Club at North Hampton is an Arnold Palmer Signature design stretching to 7,080 yards, considered by many as one of his finest layouts with a 75/144 slope/rating and challenges throughout. I played the day it opened and never forget the starter asking our handicaps and telling us which tee to play, ‘otherwise you will not have a good time here.’ The course has a plethora of sand waste areas, bunkers protecting undulating greens and 10 significant water bodies to stay clear of. I recommend a practice round to learn the nuances of North Hampton and then go test your mettle playing to score well. There are six sets of tees to enjoy the layout comfortably.
