The Pete Dye Golf Trail

Nestled in the heartland of America, Indiana offers a hidden gem for golf enthusiasts: the Pete Dye Golf Trail. The remarkable collection of golf courses pays homage to the lasting legacy of renowned golf course designer Pete Dye, who left an indelible mark on the sport. Designed with a unique blend of challenge, creativity, and beauty, the Pete Dye Golf Trail promises an unforgettable golfing experience for players of all skill levels.

The Pete Dye Golf Trail showcases seven distinct and breathtaking golf courses across the Hoosier State. Each course bears Dye’s signature touch, incorporating his trademark features that are sure to test even the most seasoned golfer. From rugged bunkers and undulating fairways to strategic water hazards and imaginative greens, Dye’s courses offer a feast for the senses and a thrilling adventure on every hole.

One of the highlights of the trail is the Pete Dye Course at French Lick Resort. Carved into the rolling hills of southern Indiana, this championship course has received numerous accolades, including being named one of “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses” by Golf Digest. Golfers are treated to panoramic views, dramatic elevation changes, and meticulously designed holes that demand precision and strategy.

From the clubhouse on Mt. Airie — Indiana’s second highest elevation point at 972 feet high — you get a 360-degree view of southern Indiana and the surrounding Hoosier National Forest. You can often see 30-40 miles in every direction.

“As I built the golf course, I tried to get the tees, the fairways, and the greens in a position that they have these long views over the valleys and hills,” stated Dye.

The Pete Dye Course at French Lick Resort is a true masterpiece and a must-play destination for golf enthusiasts.

The Brickyard Crossing Golf Club has 14 holes situated on the outskirts of the Speedway and four holes that are located within the infield of the Racing Capital of the World.

Another gem on the trail is the Brickyard Crossing Golf Course, located on the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway grounds. This unique course offers an unparalleled experience, with four holes situated inside the legendary racetrack. Imagine teeing off amidst the roar of engines and feeling the adrenaline rush as you navigate the challenging layout. The Brickyard Crossing Golf Course seamlessly blends golf and motorsports, creating an unforgettable fusion of two beloved sports.

The Fort Golf Course is a testament to Indiana’s golfing landscape’s rich history and natural beauty. Nestled within the historic confines of Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park, this course seamlessly integrates challenging gameplay with a serene and picturesque setting. The Fort boasts a layout that takes full advantage of the surrounding woodlands and rolling terrain.

Golfers are treated to a delightful blend of strategic bunkering, undulating fairways, and meticulously crafted greens that demand precision and skill. With its impeccable maintenance and attention to detail, The Fort Golf Course offers players of all levels an exceptional golfing experience that showcases the true essence of Indiana’s golfing heritage.

Maple Creek Golf and Country Club is a hidden gem situated in the heart of Indianapolis; this exceptional golf course offers a perfect balance of challenge and natural beauty. Throughout the course, one can observe Dye’s unique design elements on display, including strategically placed bunkers, rolling fairways, and greens that will test a golfer’s skill and precision. The course meanders through lush tree-lined fairways, providing a serene and picturesque backdrop for an unforgettable round of golf. Beyond the course, Maple Creek offers a warm and welcoming country club atmosphere with top-notch amenities and a vibrant community of golfers.

The Ackerman-Allen Course at Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex

The Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex, with two Pete Dye masterpieces, is located on the campus of Purdue University and is home to the PGA Forme Tour’s “Boilermaker Classic” and has hosted the 2008 NCAA Men’s Championships and the 2003 NCAA Women’s Championships on the Pete Dye-designed Kampen-Cosler Course.

The Kampen Course, a links-style course, is known for its strategic layout, sculpted fairways, demanding bunkers, and large bent-grass greens, making it a favorite among golfers looking for a true test of their abilities.

The Ackerman-Allen Course, a parkland-style course featuring large bent-grass greens, fairways, and tees, presents a challenge for golfers of all abilities with rolling hills, tree-lined fairways, white sand bunkers, and minimal water hazards.

With its commitment to excellence, stunning natural surroundings, and a rich history intertwined with Purdue University, the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex is a must-visit destination for golfers seeking an unforgettable golfing adventure.

Bordered by Lake Shafer in Monticello, the Tippecanoe Country Club opened for play in 1920 as a nine-hole golf course designed by Roy Robertson. After many facelifts and expansions, TCC caught the attention of Pete Dye in 1963. As one of his first projects, Pete Dye designed the back 9 and added lush greenery and tees to the original course — making it into the 18-hole renowned attraction it is today.

The Pete Dye Golf Trail in Indiana is a golfer’s paradise waiting to be discovered. With its collection of extraordinary courses, breathtaking landscapes, and warm Midwestern hospitality, it offers a golfing experience unlike any other. Whether you’re a devoted golf aficionado or simply appreciate the beauty of the game, a trip along the Pete Dye Golf Trail is an experience that will leave you longing for more.
